When my mom asked me to create a candle featuring one of her favorite scents, I knew the story started with one rose in a flower bed below my bedroom window. There was no rose garden, not even a bush. Just this singular thorny stem that produced one or two buds a year.
It was unremarkable enough that my parents don’t remember it. Yet, when I mentioned this rose to my sister recently, it felt like reminiscing about a childhood friend whose summer visits left a life-long impression.
